Academic Interests

My work maintains a focus on producing documentary and narrative films from a social justice lens as well as being a scholar who studies the trauma of communities of color. Through filmmaking and scholarship my work navigates areas of displacement, incarceration, immigration, crossing borders, mental health, indigenous systems of survival and gender politics in order to understand and interpret systems of oppression and show how films provide a platform for sharing stories and healing. Beyond intersectional representations of race, class and gender I am most interested in how stories are a powerful engine that change and determine identities and offer new narratives for hope. In 2018 I was selected as the recipient of the Jackie Hoffner Heart and Hope Award from the Alexander Valley Film Society for my work combining film and social justice.
